Smoke Alert for Perth metropolitan area and South West Region
This alert is issued by the Department of Environment and Conservation
The Department of Environment and Conservation advises that a smoke haze may continue to be visible between Bunbury and Perth on Thursday 23 February, as a result of the fire burning south of Northcliffe in the Shire of Manjimup.Winds are again pushing smoke from the fire over the South West and Perth metropolitan area as fire crews continue burning unburnt pockets of the fire and consolidating containment lines.
Smoke may reduce visibility on some roads and motorists should take care, turn on headlights and drive at appropriate speeds when travelling in these areas.
People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstances.

A bushfire ADVICE has been issued for people near the southern boundary of Cape Range National Park in the Shire of Exmouth.The fire which started on Learmonth Air Weapons Range has burnt into Cape Range National Park and is burning towards Yardie Creek.
There is no threat to lives or homes. Although there is no immediate danger people in the affected area need to be aware and keep up to date.WHAT TO DO:
- Stay alert and monitor your surroundings.
- Watch for signs of a bushfire, especially smoke and flames.
- Read through your bushfire survival plan.
- If you do not have a plan decide what you will do if the situation gets worse.

• The settlement of Windy Harbour
• Properties in the vicinity of Northcliffe and surrounding areas
• The coastal area between the Gardner River and Broke Inlet
• Shannon
• Broke Inlet area The fire has been contained. There is no threat to lives or homes. Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date. WHAT TO DO:
• Stay alert and monitor your surroundings.
• Read through your bushfire survival plan.
• If you do not have a plan decide what you will do if the situation gets worse.
• Stay up-to-date with broadcast alerts on the radio and internet. ROAD CLOSURES:
A number of roads remain closed including:
• Windy Harbour Road - south of Chesapeake Road
• Chesapeake Road – between Broke Inlet and Windy Harbour Road
• Deeside Coast Road –between Nelson and Chesapeake roads
• Dean Road – west of Deeside Coast Road
• Northcliffe Log Road South – south of Preston Road
• Bannister Road – south of Boorara Road
• Boorara Access Road
• All other forest roads and tracks south of KTC, Dean and Nelson roads. For further details on road closures contact DEC on 9776 1207.
Motorists should avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site. RECREATION SITE CLOSURES:
Recreation sites have been closed in the D’Entrecasteaux and Boorara-Gardner national parks, east of Windy Harbour and west of Broke Inlet, including:
• Bibbulmun Track and huts between Northcliffe and Walpole
• Coodamurrup and Fish Creek in D’Entrecasteaux National Park
• Beach access and the 4WD track from Windy Harbour to Gardner River
• Tragedy Track
• Laws Track
• Mt Chudalup recreation site DEC is working to establish a diversion for the Bibbulmun Track around the fire during the next week. BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:
The fire is contained and is now under control. There are still unburnt areas within containment lines that may still continue to burn for some time. The final fire area is about 34,060 hectares. SMOKE
Smoke from the bushfire has been drifting in a north-westerly direction under the influence of south-easterly winds. Smoke may continue to be visible along the west coast from Augusta, as far north as Perth and parts of the South West. People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstances. Motorists are advised that if they encounter smoke to slow down, drive carefully and turn on vehicle lights.
WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING:
About 160 DEC personnel, supported by FESA, the Shire of Manjimup, Forest Products Commission and volunteer bushfire brigades, have been working today to control the fire on the western and southern boundaries. Fire crews have been assisted by 27 fire trucks, five machines and several aircraft (including four water bombers and a type 1 aircraft). Over the next few days firefighters will continue to patrol and ensure containment lines are safe. Many other agencies and organisations have been providing support including the Department for Child Protection, Fire and Rescue Service volunteers and St John Ambulance. AGENCY RESPONSIBLE:

ALERT LEVEL:
A bushfire ADVICE remains for people on Meedo, Wahroonga, Edaggee and Ellavalla Stations and surrounding areas in the Shire of Carnarvon.
There is no threat to lives or homes. Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date.
WHAT TO DO:

ROAD CLOSURES:
No roads are closed.
Motorists should avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site. BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:
The bushfire is moving in a northerly direction at approximately 300 metres per hour.
It is out of control and unpredictable. The southern area of the fires near Meedo station has broken containment lines. Firefighters are protecting assets near the Meedo homestead. Approximately 13,700 hectares has been burnt.
WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING:
Volunteer Bush Fire Service firefighters, pastoralists and FESA personnel are on the scene. They have been using heavy machinery to cut fire breaks, make containment lines and back burn. One fixed wing and one aerial intelligence helicopter is assisting ground crews.
CAUSE: The fires were started by multiple lightning strikes around 5pm on Monday 20 February.

Shire of Carnarvon is managing the fire.

FESA is warning people to be extremely careful when travelling 50 kilometres north of Carnarvon on North West Coastal Highway near Mardathuna turnoff as they may be affected by smoke.
The smoke has been caused by several small fires that started due to lightning on Boolathana Station.
Pastoralists on Boolathana Station are monitoring the area.Motorists travelling through the area should take extreme caution when driving through smoke and low visibility.
FESA advises that you adhere to these simple precautions if encountering smoke on the road:
• Turn headlights on to make your vehicle more visible to others
• Drive slowly
• Keep a close watch for any firefighters or emergency service vehicles on the road
• Always follow any directions given by emergency service personnel
• If you cannot see clearly, turn around and drive to a clear area. Pull over to the side of the road, keep vehicle headlights and hazard lights on, and wait until the smoke clears. People with respiratory conditions should contact their local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.

ALERT LEVEL:A bushfire ADVICE has been issued for people 45km south of Onslow for a fire in Cane River-Mt Minnie Conservation Park, 2km south of the Onslow Access Road in the Shire of Ashburton. There is no threat to lives or homes. Although there is no immediate danger, people near Peedamulla, Mt Minnie and Minderoo homesteads need to be aware and keep up to date. WHAT TO DO:
• Stay alert and monitor your surroundings.
• Watch for signs of a bushfire, especially smoke and flames.
• Read through your bushfire survival plan.
• If you do not have a plan decide what you will do if the situation gets worse. ROAD CLOSURES:
